An Exceptional Group Hunt
The
call
out
to
members
of
the
Keystone
Detectorists
Club
(KDC) went something like this…
Where:
On the old Pembina Trail, 100 km south of
Winnipeg, between Morris and Emerson.
4 miles north of Letellier in the Two Little Points
area.
Why:
The existing road is slowly slipping into the Red
River. The municipality of Montcalm will bypass the
existing road and build a new road away from the
river bank. This will alter about 20 acres of existing
farm land; land that happens to be the old Pembina
trail.
What:
The goal is to salvage whatever history in the way of
artifacts that we can find before it all gets worked
over with the new road going in. We will try to criss-
cross the fields for better detecting results. The idea
is to save and salvage whatever history that we can
from this site before it soon becomes a road.
Wow…7
members
came
out
today.
And
they
did
a
fantastic
job.
Not
only
did
they
dig
up
55
lbs.
of
metal
and
artifacts,
everyone
also
took
the
time
to
pick
up
a
huge
assortment
of
surface
finds,
even
some
smaller
fragments
of
glass.
We
had
two
new
members
come
out.
A
heartfelt
Welcome
goes
out
to
both
Marielle
and
to
Mark.
It
sounds
like
everyone
had
a
great
day
out
on
the
land
detecting
and
digging
up
finds.
There
was
no
lack
of
targets.
Of
course
these
hunts
all
start
with
a
mandatory stop at Tim’s in Morris.
The
find
of
the
day
goes
to
Marielle
who
beeped
in
on
a
most
unusual
find.
A
1
Ore
Swedish
coin
dated
1867.
There
is
no
recorded
history
of
any
Scandinavian
settler
in
this
part
of
the
province
but…
this
site
is
right
over
the
Old
Pembina
Trail
and
there
are
a
huge
number
of
Scandinavian
settlers
in
Minnesota.
Many
also
settled
in
Winnipeg.
My
best
guess
is
that
this
coin
was
dropped
and
lost
by
a
traveler
on
the
trail
in
the late 1870’s or 80’s.
Monty
came
in
a
close
second
with
his
lucky
horseshoe.
Mark…
well
he
dug
a
“Pit”
to
get
the
biggest
piece
of
metal
of
all.
It’s
that
huge
triangle
plate
on
the
top
left
of
the
first
all
iron
photos.
Poor
man
had
to
dig
deep
to
get
it
all
out,
to
the
point
where
most
of
us
stopped
detecting
just
to
watch
him
work.
Hey
Mark…
when
you
get
to
China,
can
you
pick
up
my
order
while
you're
there.
The
piece
is
a
monstrosity.
Actually,
I
think
it’s
the
front door to a wood stove of some kind.
There
are
4
photos
all
in
a
row
of
all
of
the
iron
finds
from
today.
Close
ups
of
the
interesting
individual
items
come
after
and in the order that the full picture features.
Here
are
just
some
of
the
Highlights.
You
can
do
a
close
up
on
your
own
of
the
individual
pictures
to
get
a
closer
look.
Yup,
that’s
a
lot
of
artifacts.
The
end
goal
is
to
get
the
better
pieces
out
to
the
St.
Joseph
Museum
so
that
everyone
can
enjoy
them along with the effort the team put in today.
